#03 - THE PERSONHOOD OF JESUS, OUR FRIEND
1. What did Christ say of Himself? John 8:58 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: Jesus here claimed the title of God to Himself as was revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14 at the time Moses was being called of God to lead the children of Israel out of the bondage to Egypt. There is no question that the Jews who heard Jesus make this claim understood exactly what He said in making His claim in the very highest possible sense and is evidenced by their intent to stone Him (John 8:59) and by other testimony. ►John 5:18; 19:7 2. How was Christ recognised by the Father while He was here? Matthew 3:17 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 3. What evidence did Jesus offer the people of His time that attested to His divinity? John 10:37-38; 11:43-44 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 4. What method did Christ use to prove He was the Son of God as He claimed? Luke 24:27 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: Christ gave the people ample evidence that would appeal to their senses to sustain His claim of oneness with God, as demonstrated by the mighty work that He performed; but miracles in and of themselves, are not always absolute proof of a divine power (Revelation 13:11-13; 2 Thessalonians 2:9). It was in the prophecies however, that incontrovertible evidence is found, most clearly supporting Christ’s claim to the One sent of God. In the next section we will take a more detailed look at those prophecies concerning the Christ. 5. Where was Jesus to be born? Micah 5:2 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 6. What was predicted regarding little children, in connection with the birth of Jesus? Jeremiah 31:15 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 7. How were the words of the prophet verified? Matthew 2:16-18 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 8. Of whom was He to be born, and what was one of His names? Isaiah 7:14 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 9. Was this prophecy also fulfilled? Matthew 1:21-23 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 10. How was He to be received by His own people? Isaiah 53:3 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled John 1:10-11 11. For what price was Jesus betrayed? Zechariah 11:12 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled Matthew 26:15 12. What was said concerning His personal defense at His trial? Isaiah 53:7 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled Matthew 27:13, 14 13. What was said of His treatment on the cross? Psalm 69:21 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled Matthew 27:34 14. How was it foretold that His murderers would dispose of His clothing? Psalm 22:18 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled Matthew 27:35 15. Where was the grave of Christ to be made? Isaiah 53:9 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Fulfilled Matthew 27:57-60 NOTE: In Christ, over 300 prophecies were fulfilled concerning Himself as given in the Old Testament.) 16. Having established the reality of the divinity of Jesus, we now turn to His humanity, for Jesus was as surely man as He was God. What form did Jesus take as a man? Philippians 2:7 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: The word servant in the Bible is equivalent to that of a slave or bondmen. Jesus humbled Himself to the lowest form of man, not just in form but in station. Isaiah 42:1 17. Was He just as much flesh and blood as you and I? 1John 4:3 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: the word antichrist does not mean someone who is in direct opposition to Christ in an open and overt fashion. Rather, a person is of the spirit of antichrist if they mix truth with error and thus deceive another into thinking what they are teaching is 100% truth when it is not. 18. What was one reason why this had to be so? Hebrews 5:8-9 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: Jesus became a man. He shed His divinity. He had to become our representative and be like us in every way. He learned obedience through suffering as a man, not as God. He surrendered His will to that of His Father and gave Himself wholly to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Hebrs 2:9-10 19. Was Jesus made a man after the fashion of Adam before Adam sinned? Hebrews 2:14 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 20. How else is this described? Romans 8:3 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: See margin note. 20. Was Jesus made after the manner of angels? Hebrews 2:9, 16 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Hebrews 2:6-8; Psalm 8:4-8 21. What was the nature of Jesus like, His character? Hebrews 2:16 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 22. What was the nature of Abraham? Genesis 15:6; 22:17, 18; 26:5 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: In Romans 4:19-22, Abraham is described as being fully persuaded that God was able to perform the things He promised, and this degree of belief is what was counted to him for righteousness as a matter of faith. So also, this same character is that which Christ had, a converted person, from the moment of birth. 23. What else is said of Abraham’s seed? Galatians 3:29 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: To be Christ’s is to be converted, to have been justified by the blood of the Lamb, as we will go into more detail in the next couple of lessons. So as surely as Christ converts us, so also was Abraham converted and to be Abraham’s seed is to be righteous as Christ is righteous. 24. With that being said, was Jesus capable of sin? Hebrews 4:15 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: The difference between us and Jesus is that He was born of the Holy Spirit, the new man of regeneration. He had an earthly mother in Mary, so he had her nature of sin. But because the Holy Spirit was used of the Father to impregnate her, He was conceived as a converted person without the propensity or desire to sin. Thus although He had a sin nature like us with the capacity to sin, because He was converted, and maintained that state throughout His life by unreservedly surrendering all He was to The Father, and doing nothing but what the Father told Him to do through the Holy Spirit; He never yielded to sin and thus overcame sin and by His death on the cross, destroyed death and him who had the power of death, Satan. 25. Do we have Scriptural evidence of that fact? Matthew 1:21 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: So we can see the Bible shows us that Jesus was 100% man and 100% God at the same time. It is not for our finite minds to fully understand this reality, but accept it in faith, being fully persuaded that such is so. 26. Why is this so important? 1Peter 2:21 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ NOTE: If He was anything but man, or had any advantage over us, then God would be asking us to do an impossible thing, and Satan would win the controversy. Such cannot be. 27. Now we turn to why, as the Son of God, did Jesus become man and die. First of all, why are all human beings, including ourselves, doomed? Romans 5:12 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 28. What has Jesus done to pay the penalty for our sins? Isaiah 53:4-6 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ John 1:29; Romans 6:23b 29. Why did Jesus have to take our place (i.e., become our substitute) and pay for our sins? Romans 3:25-26 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ John 1:14; 1Timothy 3:16; Hebrew 2:14, 17; Philippians 2:5-8 30. Can we receive forgiveness by keeping God’s law? Romans 3:20 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Galatians 2:16 31. If keeping the law will not save us, how can we be saved from our sins? Acts 16:30-31 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Romans 10:13; John 3:16 NOTE: Belief in Jesus involves more than a mere acknowledgement of His existence, for “even the demons believe and tremble.” James 2:19. Saving belief means first, accepting Jesus as the “way, the truth and the life,” John 14:6; and then making Him our Lord by denying self and following Him. Mark 8:34 32. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour, what does God do with our “sins that were previously committed?” Romans 3:24-25 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Acts 3:19 NOTE: When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, He becomes our substitute (propitiation) and we are free from condemnation Romans 8:1. Our sins are transferred to the heavenly sanctuary, where, when we allow Christ to mold us and fashion us after His own likeness, they will be blotted out forever. 33. In order for us to be forgiven, a change must take place in our attitudes. We must be sorry for our sins. How can we become sorry (repentant) for our sins so that we can receive the merits of Christ’s death in our behalf? Acts 5:30-31 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Romans 2:4; 2 Corinthians 7:10; Luke 24:47 NOTE: We cannot make ourselves sorry for our sins. We must come to Jesus just as we are, and He will give us both repentance and forgiveness. 34. Besides giving us repentance and forgiveness for the sins we have committed, what else does Jesus promise to do for us? 1John 1:9 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Ezekiel 36:25-29 35. How does God cleanse us from sin, transforming our characters? Romans 8:1-4, 13-14 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 2Corinthians 5:21; John 14:26; 16:13-14 NOTE: He does this by giving us the same Spirit (divine power) as He did to Jesus who kept Him from sin. 36. After Jesus came down to live and die in our behalf, where did He go and what is one thing He is doing today for us? Hebrews 4:14-16 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ Hebrews 7:25; 2:17-18; 6:19-20 - See also: 1Timothy 2:5 NOTE: Jesus is also performing the role of judge. We will go into that later when we study the sanctuary. 37. What motive prompted God to give us this wonderful Friend and Saviour, Jesus, who can save us from sin and give us eternal life? John 3:16 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ 1John 4:8-10 38. Is there any other way to be saved? Acts 4:12; John 14:6 THE BIBLE SAYS: ______________________________________________________ COMMENT: Many are willing to concede to Jesus Christ the position of a great teacher or a prophet – a “light,” but not that of divinity. This cannot be; if Christ was not the divine Son of God, He is guilty of perpetrating the greatest and cruelest hoax of all time. Jesus Christ claimed for Himself the title of divinity and oneness with God that allowed no compromise. Jesus was either God in the flesh, or a liar and a cheat. It can be no other way. It was Jesus Himself who said, “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit, neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit.” Luke 6:43, 44 Based on that, you know who Jesus is, and how much He loves you and desires you to believe and accept Him as your Saviour. If you do, He will give you repentance and forgiveness, and He will help you in every time of need. God loves you and wants you to live with Him forever. That is why He gave His only Son to die in your place. That is why Jesus is still ministering for you in heaven as your High Priest. Will you accept Him as your Lord and Saviour today? Will you ask Jesus to come into your life and make you His child? MY RESPONSE TO CHRIST IS □ YES □ UNDECIDED Email us at: admin@thebiblesays.net
